EMERYVILLE, Calif. – Sunday evening saw Emeryville authorities rush to the scene when approximately 300 young individuals split into groups, engaging in several brawls close to the AMC Theater at Bay and Shellmound Streets.
Fresno resident, Kathryn Borrud, found herself amidst the group as they were exiting the vicinity.
Borrud described the event, stating, "I encountered this huge gathering of youth, maybe around 300 to 400 of them. At first, everything appeared normal, but suddenly they began rushing in our direction, giving an impression of possible gunfire or a stabbing incident."
During the chaos, both Borrud and her son were shoved and fell over. She recalled, "Someone bumped into me, making me fall. My son ended up with some bruises."
The Emeryville police clarified that during these altercations, a solitary gunshot rang out, fortunately not injuring anyone. About an hour post the incident, a young individual was wounded with a knife close to Elm Street and was later taken to Highland Hospital with non-critical injuries.
Captain Oliver Collins of the Emeryville Police Department informed ABC7 News that only one out of the many teenagers present was detained.
Witness Brenda Valladares questioned, "What were so many kids, possibly more than 400, doing here without any parental supervision? It's unsettling because my daughter occasionally wants to watch movies and I feel she isn't old enough to go alone."
Valladares also noted that the disturbance at Bay Street Mall extended to a nearby Target. She observed teens wreaking havoc, pulling merchandise off the racks, littering the premises, and shoplifting in full view of her family.
Annalise Garcia, another witness, mentioned, "People were infuriated and shoplifting was rampant. Items were everywhere."
The police didn't verify the relation to the Target chaos but did indicate a social media invite, which seemed to have summoned the large group of teenagers to the Bay Street Mall.
Borrud commented on the unsettling events, stating, "It was a night of fright in Emeryville."
Interestingly, this occurred on National Cinema Day when AMC Theaters had a promotion selling tickets at a mere $4. Following these events, AMC announced the temporary closure of this specific venue on their website.
