Chicago Man Pleads Guilty to Carjacking, Receives 11-Year Sentence
CHICAGO — Cross Banks, 20, who initially denied involvement in a carjacking, changed his plea and pleaded guilty on Friday, receiving an 11-year prison sentence. This comes two years after his initial court appearance in December 2022, when he denied the charges.
During the December hearing, Banks was heard muttering, “Wasn’t me”, and questioning how prosecutors could identify him. However, video evidence proved otherwise. Surveillance footage showed Banks committing the carjacking and later attempting to have the flat tire of the stolen car repaired. In both videos, he wore the same clothes, including distinctive multi-colored underwear.
The incident occurred outside Martin’s Supermarket on West Addison when Banks, armed with what appeared to be an assault rifle, demanded the keys from the victim and forced her against her 2018 Mercedes. After the car was stolen, the victim’s Mercedes appeared at a nearby mechanic shop, and Banks tried to get the tire fixed.
Upon noticing the stolen vehicle, Chicago police officers acted quickly. When they approached the car, Banks fled, but police soon found him with the victim’s key fob and credit cards. Officers also discovered a plastic Airsoft rifle inside the car, and Banks was wearing a latex glove—just like the robber seen in the surveillance footage.
In exchange for his guilty plea, Banks received the 11-year sentence, which will be halved for good behavior and reduced by 821 days for time served while awaiting trial.
