HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Police have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the fatal shooting of two people in southern Hillsborough on December 29.
Kenyon Raishaun Cameron faces two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of 16-year-old Zikera Wardlow and 20-year-old De’Anthony Letrelle Morgan.
Authorities discovered the victims around 6:40 a.m. on December 30, responding to a report of gunshot injuries on Cardinal Drive, near Old N.C. 86. Officers found both Wardlow and Morgan inside a vehicle at the end of the road, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.
Cameron was apprehended Wednesday afternoon during a traffic stop on Orange Grove Road. The arrest involved collaboration between the Hillsborough Police Department, the State Bureau of Investigation, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, and the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office. Cameron is being held without bond at the Orange County Detention Center.
The families of the victims expressed mixed emotions following the arrest. Rico McDowell, Morgan’s father, called it a step toward justice, saying, “We buried De’Anthony [on Tuesday], and with this news, it’s definitely some relief.”
Bobbie Chappell, Wardlow’s mother, questioned the motive behind the killings. “This gentleman killed these two babies for no reason, and they didn’t have any affiliation with each other,” she said.
Both families stated they were not familiar with Cameron.
Cameron is expected to make his first court appearance on Thursday afternoon. Authorities urge anyone with additional information to contact Investigator Andrew Jones at 919-296-9562 or via email at andrew.jones@hillsboroughnc.gov.
