Two Arrested, Weapons Recovered in Police Investigation on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile

Chicago police arrested two men and recovered four loaded firearms, including a machine gun and a rifle, during an investigation into a wanted vehicle on the Magnificent Mile, according to police reports.

On Tuesday afternoon, Judge Mary Marubio ordered Davion Thomas, 21, and Erick Griffith, 24, to remain in custody, citing them as public safety risks.

The incident unfolded around 3 p.m. on Monday, when officers were searching for a white GMC Acadia in the area of Walton and Michigan. The vehicle had previously fled from police and was reportedly occupied by someone armed with a rifle. Officers located the car in the 100 block of East Walton, near the Drake Hotel.

As police examined the vehicle, Thomas exited a nearby store. Upon noticing the officers, he allegedly clutched his waist and fled, prompting a brief foot chase. Police apprehended him in the 100 block of East Delaware, during which a loaded handgun fell from his waistband. The gun was equipped with an illegal machine gun switch and a drum-style magazine, according to the arrest report.

Thomas allegedly admitted to carrying the weapon for protection and acknowledged that the switch enabled automatic gunfire. He now faces charges of unlawful use of a machine gun and possession of a defaced firearm.

Meanwhile, officers reportedly saw Griffith discard a stolen handgun in a planter on the 900 block of North Michigan. Police recovered the firearm and found the GMC’s key fob in Griffith’s pocket.

Inside the vehicle, authorities discovered another loaded handgun with an extended magazine and a short-barreled “ghost” rifle. Griffith has been charged with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and possession of a stolen firearm.

The investigation remains ongoing.
