Two inmates, considered dangerous and charged with murder, escaped from a Mississippi jail early Friday morning, leading to a manhunt.

Tyrekennel Collins, 24, and Dezarrious Johnson, 18, broke out of the Claiborne County Detention Center at approximately 2:20 a.m., according to a Facebook post from the sheriff's office.

Chief Deputy Christy Sykes reported that Collins and Johnson climbed through a ceiling panel in a common area of the jail. They then reached a window and used bed sheets to lower themselves to the ground. Other inmates immediately notified jail staff about the escape. Johnson sustained a leg injury during the escape, resulting in a noticeable limp, authorities said.

Sykes noted that Collins and Johnson did not leave the facility armed, but cautioned that they should still be considered dangerous. The sheriff's office advised residents to "take necessary precautions."

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation warned the public not to approach the two men and urged anyone who sees them to call 911 or the sheriff's office. Collins was detained on charges from Copiah County, including the 2023 arrest for the killing of his 46-year-old cousin, according to NBC affiliate WLBT of Jackson.

Johnson was being held on charges from Jefferson County. The search for Collins and Johnson is ongoing, with U.S. Marshals having contacted their families, according to Sykes. Both men will face additional charges once captured.

Sykes mentioned that this is not the first time inmates have escaped through a ceiling panel at the facility. "It's been an issue," she said. "We're working closely with the board of supervisors to resolve this as quickly as possible."
