CHICAGO — Man Sentenced to 45 Years for Shooting at Pedestrian and Police Officers
Antwan Dixon, 27, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of attempted murder. The charges stemmed from a violent encounter on the Far South Side in January 2024, where Dixon shot at a pedestrian and then fired at responding police officers.
On the morning of January 17, 2024, at approximately 1:46 a.m., Dixon fired at a man who was walking to a bus stop for work in the 13000 block of South Evans. The shooting triggered a ShotSpotter alert, prompting officers to respond to the scene.
As the officers arrived in their marked squad car, Dixon emerged from behind a building and began shooting at them. The gunfire struck the officers’ vehicle, and one officer, in the passenger seat, returned fire as her partner attempted to reverse the car for safety. Despite the officers’ efforts to evade Dixon’s gunfire, the squad car was disabled, and the officers were forced to exit the vehicle and seek cover.
No officers were injured in the gunfire, but several rounds struck the squad car. Dixon was later apprehended with a firearm tucked in his waistband, and forensic tests confirmed that the gun matched the one used in the shooting.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) reviewed the incident and determined that both officers acted reasonably in response to the threat. Dixon was sentenced by Judge Thomas Hennelly, and he will serve 85% of his 45-year sentence, making his expected parole date April 11, 2062.
The release of body camera footage and other investigative materials may be forthcoming after the criminal case concludes.
