21-Year-Old Charged with Six Murders and Four Attempted Murders in Chicago

CHICAGO — Antonio Reyes, 21, has been charged with six murders and the attempted murders of four others, including three children, in a series of random killings over a span of nine months in 2020. Reyes is accused of targeting victims with no prior connection to him, making the crimes all the more shocking.

The victims were killed between March and November 2020, with the charges detailing a string of brutal shootings:

• March 2, 2020: 31-year-old Francisco Mangana shot and killed in the 2600 block of West 59th Street.

• April 5, 2020: 21-year-old Claudio Cossio shot and killed in the 4100 block of South Sacramento Avenue, with another man also targeted in the same shooting.

• May 1, 2020: 16-year-old Damian Duran shot and killed in the 5200 block of South Homan Avenue.

• June 24, 2020: 26-year-old Luis Davalos Garcia shot and killed in the 5800 block of South Rockwell Avenue.

• November 8, 2020: 31-year-old Jose Martinez killed, with his three children—aged between 3 and 9—also targeted but surviving the attack.

• November 9, 2020: 20-year-old Justin Gonzalez shot and killed in the 4700 block of West 59th Street.

Authorities say the killings were random, and Reyes had no personal connection to the victims, which includes some chilling details, such as the murder of a man at a gas station while he tried to buy a soda and a shooting that occurred in front of children.

A Long Investigation and Arrest

Reyes, arrested in December 2020 for one of the murders, was charged with the remaining killings earlier this month after detectives linked him to all six through evidence, including a .40 caliber handgun recovered after the June 2020 shooting. Reyes was active on social media, and detectives found posts connecting him to the murders, while surveillance video and community tips helped further the investigation.

Chief of Detectives Antoinette Ursitti noted that Reyes allegedly had a history of violence, having even attempted to kill his cellmate with a shank while incarcerated.

A Grieving Mother’s Message

One of the key breakthroughs came from Damian Duran’s mother, Marlen Rangel, who had a chilling conversation with Reyes on Snapchat shortly after her son was lured into a car by him. In a haunting exchange, Reyes allegedly told Rangel, “That’s why your son is rotting in hell,” a statement that helped police connect the dots in the case.

Reyes has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is scheduled to appear in court on March 18. Authorities are still investigating whether he could be linked to other unsolved shootings.

Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling stated, “These are six lives that were brutally taken,” acknowledging the disturbing nature of the crimes and the relief the arrests bring to the victims’ families and the city.
