CHICAGO — A 27-year-old man allegedly lured his ex-girlfriend into his car and shot her six times in a jealous rage, later telling police he only stopped because he ran out of bullets, prosecutors said Friday.
Greiver Urbina-Romero is accused of confronting his 41-year-old ex-girlfriend on January 5 in the 1100 block of South Monitor after spotting her having a meal with a male co-worker. Prosecutors said Urbina-Romero demanded she come downstairs to talk, and she agreed, entering his vehicle.
Once inside, he allegedly pulled out a gun. The woman tried to flee, but Urbina-Romero opened fire, hitting her with six bullets and causing 12 gunshot wounds, according to court documents.
“When asked why he shot the victim six times, the defendant explained that he stopped because he ran out of bullets,” the state’s detention petition stated.
The victim was still hospitalized as of Friday. Urbina-Romero was arrested this week and charged with attempted murder.
Prosecutors also revealed that Urbina-Romero tried to dispose of the firearm by throwing it into Lake Michigan. Judge Torrie Corbin ordered him detained, describing him as “obsessing over” the victim.
