Woman Detained After Stabbing Two People During Carjacking and Crash in Chicago
CHICAGO — A 21-year-old woman accused of stabbing two people during a violent carjacking and subsequent crash was ordered held in custody on Saturday by a Cook County judge.
Vanessa Delgado faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, stemming from the incidents that began early Thursday morning in the 5100 block of South Rutherford.
Police said the chaos started around 6:31 a.m. when Delgado attacked a 41-year-old woman as she was walking to her car. Delgado allegedly stabbed the woman and fled the scene in the victim’s 2014 Nissan Rogue. The victim suffered critical injuries in the attack.
Minutes later, Delgado reportedly crashed the stolen vehicle into parked cars on the 5100 block of South Mulligan. When a 30-year-old man came outside to check on her after hearing the crash, Delgado allegedly stabbed him as well. Fortunately, he was not seriously injured and was listed in good condition, according to police.
Members of the Chicago Fire Department, who responded to the crash scene, restrained Delgado until Chicago police arrived and arrested her. She was taken to Holy Cross Hospital for evaluation.
At a Saturday hearing, Judge Mary Marubio granted a detention petition, keeping Delgado in custody, citing her as a public safety risk. Delgado is charged with two counts each of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, along with one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking.
The case remains under investigation, and Delgado awaits further legal proceedings.
