Rescue Efforts Underway as Boat Overturns during Upstate New York Cave Tour

Lockport, New York - Emergency personnel are currently engaged in a mission to save individuals who were plunged into the water following the capsizing of a boat during a cave excursion in upstate New York.

The Lockport Police, alongside other responding agencies, swiftly arrived at the scene after receiving a distress call regarding the incident at Lockport Cave at approximately 11:30 a.m. The cave, situated roughly 30 miles northeast of Buffalo, became the focal point of the rescue operation.

As of Monday afternoon, the situation remains ongoing, with local deputies informing WIVB-TV that around 30 adults were aboard the boat when it overturned. Reports from the Eastern Niagara Health System, as conveyed to WKBW-TV, indicate that four adults have been receiving medical attention from the health system. Fortunately, their conditions are not believed to be critical.

According to WIVB-TV, the Lockport Cave, nestled approximately 70 feet below ground level and adjacent to the Erie Canal, is currently submerged in water measuring four to six feet deep. The Lockport Cave & Underground Boat Ride, an establishment offering tours within the cave, has been in operation since June 1977.
