CHICAGO — Two individuals have been charged with carjacking after police tracked them using an AirTag attached to the victim’s key fob.**
On August 30, around 8:13 p.m., Chicago police responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 8300 block of South Exchange, where they also received a report of a carjacking at the same location, as per a report from the Chicago Police Department (CPD).
Upon arrival, officers encountered a 37-year-old man who informed them that his Audi Q7 SUV had been taken at gunpoint in the 8100 block of South Escabana. Following the carjacking, the victim, along with a 41-year-old woman, pursued the suspects in another vehicle, according to a CPD media release.
The chase came to an abrupt end when someone inside the stolen SUV opened fire on the pursuing vehicle, grazing the woman’s shoulder, the release noted.
Fortunately, the victim’s key fob was connected to an AirTag, which allowed police to track the stolen vehicle. Officers eventually located the SUV and arrested Randall Archie and Mercedes Jones, both 18 years old, nearby.
Court records indicate that Jones allegedly lured the victim to the carjacking scene by asking him to sell her marijuana. When the victim arrived, Archie reportedly brandished a gun and took the SUV.
At the time of their arrest, Archie was allegedly in possession of a loaded handgun with an extended magazine and had the stolen SUV’s key fob in his pocket, prosecutors said.
Both Archie and Jones have reportedly admitted to their roles in the carjacking. They are now facing charges of aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm. Additionally, Archie is charged with unlawful use of a weapon. However, neither of them has been charged with shooting the woman.
Judge Shauna Boliker has ordered both suspects to be held in custody while they await trial.
Good going!
