A man from Chicago who accepted a ride to the suburbs from someone he met at the Greyhound bus station ended up robbing the driver upon reaching their destination. He then attempted to escape from the police by disguising himself as a woman, officials reported.
Bennie Gates, 19, of the 6100 block of South Loomis, was held by DuPage County Judge Jeffrey MacKay at the state’s request.
Around 7 a.m. on Friday, Elmhurst police were approached at an apartment complex by a man who reported being robbed at gunpoint, according to a statement from DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin.
The victim recounted that he had agreed to give Gates a ride from the Greyhound station at 630 West Harrison to the apartment complex in exchange for $40. Upon arrival, Gates got out of the car and walked over to the driver’s side. “You didn’t know I had a gun, did you?” Gates allegedly said while drawing a firearm from his waistband.
Gates then forced the driver to return the $40 and walked away, as stated in Berlin’s press release.
Elmhurst police identified an apartment where they suspected Gates was staying and placed it under surveillance. As they watched, an Uber arrived, and “what appeared to be a female in a bomber jacket with long hair and a beanie” emerged from the apartment and entered the Uber, according to Berlin.
The police stopped the Uber and discovered that the passenger was actually a man wearing a wig. The suspect fled, crossing six lanes of traffic. Gates was eventually apprehended in a garage after a search involving a helicopter, dogs, and drones.
“Mr. Gates’ attempt to disguise himself as a woman did not fool anyone,” Berlin stated. He commended the Elmhurst investigators and thanked various law enforcement agencies that aided in the search, including the Chicago Police Department’s helicopter unit.
