Chicago police have announced the arrest of a man wanted in connection with the murder of an off-duty officer from last month. The department stated that officers and the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended 22-year-old Xavier Tate Jr. in Glendale Heights, Illinois, on Wednesday night. He faces a first-degree murder charge.
Chicago police officer Luis M. Huesca, 30, was shot and killed just two days shy of his 31st birthday.
Tate's arrest follows five days after he was identified as the suspect in the murder of 30-year-old Chicago police officer Luis Huesca. The department urged the community to keep the Huesca family in their thoughts and prayers as they grieve his loss.
Huesca was killed on April 21 in the Gage Park neighborhood as he was heading home from his shift. Although he was in his uniform, he had other clothing layered over it. Police superintendent Larry Snelling noted Huesca was shot nearly 20 times with a modified automatic weapon.
Huesca’s vehicle was stolen during the attack and found nearby shortly after. His service weapon and badge were not located at the scene, according to reports.
When police identified Tate as a suspect on April 26, they released video footage of him in convenience stores and on a sidewalk. Court records show that Tate was previously arrested for criminal trespass on March 6 in Olympia Fields, and he was due in court for that case last week.
