Chicago shootings: 31 shot, 4 fatally, in weekend gun violence across city, police say

Chicago experienced a violent weekend as a spate of shootings left a trail of tragedy and injury across the city. According to authorities, a total of 31 individuals were shot, with four losing their lives in the incidents.

On Sunday morning, two men were shot in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the South Side.


Tragically, one of the victims, a 30-year-old man, succumbed to his injuries after being shot multiple times. He was rushed to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn but was pronounced dead. The other man, aged 25, sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was listed in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.


Later that same day, in the North Lawndale neighborhood, a 20-year-old man was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. as the victim stood on a sidewalk along the 1900-block of South St. Louis Avenue. An assailant approached him in a vehicle and opened fire, striking him multiple times. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.


In the early hours of Sunday, tragedy struck once more as a man lost his life in a shooting in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. Santos Rodriguez, aged 27, sustained multiple gunshot wounds while on a street in the 3700-block of West Division Street. He was swiftly transported to Mount Sinai Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.


Additionally, three teenagers, aged 16, 18, and 19, were shot near a CTA station on West 95th Street. According to reports, a 19-year-old man engaged in a physical altercation on the sidewalk before seeking refuge in the train station vestibule. The individual he had clashed with fired shots, striking all three teens. The 16-year-old boy sustained gunshot wounds to his arm and back and was listed in critical condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center. The other two victims were transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where the 18-year-old was in good condition, while the 19-year-old was in fair condition.


On Saturday night, a 16-year-old boy was shot while on the back porch of a residence in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood. At approximately 9:30 p.m., an unidentified individual fired a gun, hitting the victim in the head. The wounded teenager was in critical condition and receiving treatment at Illinois Masonic Hospital.


Furthermore, three additional teenagers, aged 15, 16, and 17, were injured in separate shootings that occurred on the South and West Sides of the city over the course of the weekend.
