Chicago Teen Murder Victim Finally Identified Four Decades Later
After a painstaking investigation spanning 40 years, the body of a Chicago teenager, who fell victim to serial killer Larry Eyler in 1983, has been identified.
Keith Lavell Bibbs was a mere 17 years old when he vanished without a trace in 1983. His remains were part of a grim discovery made on an abandoned farm in Lake Village, Indiana, in October of the same year, where four bodies were found.
Known as Adam Doe back then, Bibbs had been a hitchhiker unfortunate enough to cross paths with Eyler, a serial killer who preyed on young boys and men. Eyler eventually confessed to the horrific murder before he met his end through lethal injection in 1994.
While two of the victims, Michael Bauer and John Bartlett, were identified relatively quickly after the discovery, it took authorities several years to ascertain the identities of Bibbs and victim John Brandenburg.
In a recent press release on Monday, the Newton County Coroner's Office confirmed that all four victims have now been identified. The breakthrough in identifying Bibbs came through the use of genetic genealogy, with valuable assistance from the DNA Doe Project and Newton County's chief deputy prosecutor, Rebecca Goddard.
The coroner's office revealed, "After reaching out to potential family members and obtaining their DNA samples through a program called GEDMatch, a match was established. The family of the victim was informed discreetly, and a Family Reference Sample (FRS) was obtained from a potential brother of 'Adam.'"
The genetic sample was then tested by Indiana State Police, conclusively confirming that Bibbs was indeed Adam Doe. Out of respect for Bibbs' family, authorities have chosen not to release further details at this time.
The resolution of this long-standing mystery brings some closure to the family of Keith Lavell Bibbs and serves as a testament to the tireless efforts of those who worked diligently to bring justice to the victims of this heinous serial killer.
