A Chicago woman, Clarisa Figueroa, was sentenced to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to murder for killing a pregnant teenager and removing the baby from her womb nearly five years ago. During her court appearance, Figueroa, 51, sat in a wheelchair wearing a bright yellow jumpsuit and acknowledged that she understood she would serve her full sentence without the possibility of parole, according to reports.
Prosecutors stated that Figueroa strangled 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Lopez with a cable on April 23, 2019, after inviting her to her home with the promise of free baby clothes. Ochoa-Lopez, who was nine months pregnant, was then killed, and Figueroa called emergency services claiming she had given birth and the baby was not breathing. The child died
around two months later.

Yovanny Lopez, the victim’s husband and the father of the child, described the impact of the tragedy on him and the couple’s older child, Joshua, who has lost his mother. In a statement read in Spanish and English in court, Lopez said the memory of his infant son's final breath in his arms caused him great pain and expressed his hope for justice for Figueroa.
After the death of Clarisa Figueroa's adult son, she claimed she was pregnant and planned to obtain a newborn. She shared photos of a decorated nursery and an ultrasound on social media. In March 2019, she and Ochoa-Lopez met through a Facebook group for pregnant women.
Police investigating Ochoa-Lopez's disappearance discovered she had visited Figueroa's home. Two weeks later, authorities found her car parked near the residence, and Clarisa's daughter, Desiree, stated that her mother had recently given birth. DNA tests revealed the child was not Figueroa's.
Ochoa-Lopez's body was found in a garbage can outside the Figueroa home. Authorities said Figueroa deceived her boyfriend, Piotr Bobak, into thinking he was the child's father. Bobak cleaned up the crime scene and was sentenced to four years in prison for obstruction of justice after pleading guilty last year.
Desiree Figueroa, 29, pleaded guilty to murder in January for assisting her mother and received a 30-year prison sentence. She had agreed to testify against Clarisa Figueroa.
