The first weekend of the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has ended, but the festival operators have been slapped with a hefty fine by the city of Indio before the start of Weekend 2. The festival has been fined $117,000 for violating the curfew on all three nights of the first weekend, as reported by Pitchfork.
Frank Ocean's performance on Sunday exceeded the curfew by nearly half an hour, as his set was scheduled to end at midnight Pacific time but started almost an hour late. On Friday and Saturday, the festival also went beyond the 1 a.m. curfew by over 20 minutes each night.
The organizers of the event, Goldenvoice, have agreed to pay the city a fine of $20,000 for exceeding the curfew by five minutes and $1,000 for each additional minute since 2013. The fines collected will be directed towards Indio's General Fund to cover the costs of public works, the fire and police departments, and other operating expenses.
KTLA 5 News has requested a statement from the festival organizers and is awaiting a response.
