A resident of Larimer County has been apprehended by authorities following accusations of fatally shooting his neighbors' cattle. Michael Hester now faces multiple charges, including aggravated animal cruelty, second-degree criminal trespass, theft of certain animals, and firing across a public highway.
The Larimer County Sheriff's Office responded to a call on April 1 reporting that Hester had allegedly shot and killed livestock on Buckhorn Road. Witnesses informed deputies that Hester had been driving a UTV while firing at their cattle.During the investigation, deputies discovered seven deceased cattle scattered across the vicinity. Additionally, they found an eighth cow severely injured and had to euthanize it due to its condition.
The financial loss incurred from the dead cattle is estimated to exceed $30,000.Hester was taken into custody and subsequently granted a $5,000 personal recognizance bond by the Larimer County Court.Undersheriff Joe Shellhammer condemned the act, emphasizing its impact on both life and livelihood.
He affirmed the community's commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its livestock against such threats.Colorado's "Open Range Law" permits livestock owners to allow their animals to roam freely, except in areas specifically enclosed to prevent their access.
