Chicago Man Charged in Double Murder of High School Students
CHICAGO — A 22-year-old man has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of two high school students outside Innovations High School last year. Prosecutors detailed the extensive investigation that led to the arrest of Tommie Coleman, who now faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder.
The shooting occurred around 12:30 p.m. on January 26, 2024, as 17-year-old Monterio Williams and 16-year-old Robert Boston left school with a group of students. As they walked near the CTA station on North Wabash, a stolen Infiniti SUV pulled up, and three gunmen exited, opening fire for approximately 15 seconds. Both teens were killed, and a stray bullet narrowly missed a 25-year-old woman walking by, piercing her coat sleeve.
Investigation Leads to Arrest
Detectives used social media posts, phone records, stolen vehicle reports, and surveillance footage to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. Hours after the attack, police received a tip identifying one of the shooters, who has since died. A search warrant for his Instagram account uncovered a video recorded 18 minutes after the shooting inside the stolen SUV. In the video, the deceased gunman rapped about wearing masks, carrying weapons, and shooting at rivals.
Another video, recorded by Coleman from the front seat while the deceased gunman filmed in the back, showed all three suspects displaying firearms, prosecutors said.
Investigators also linked a third, yet-to-be-charged suspect to the scene. Surveillance footage from Innovations High School allegedly captured him changing clothes and leaving campus 90 minutes before the shooting. GPS and video evidence traced him to a parking garage where he entered the stolen Infiniti. Location data from all three suspects’ phones confirmed they were together before, during, and after the murders.
Charges and Criminal History
Coleman was arrested Wednesday and charged with:
• Two counts of first-degree murder
• Attempted murder
• Aggravated discharge of a firearm toward an occupied vehicle
• Felon in possession of a firearm
• Failure to register as a gun offender
Prosecutors revealed Coleman has pending cases in Indiana for auto theft and possession of a machine gun. He was previously convicted of unlawful possession of a weapon in DuPage County in 2021.
Judge William Fahy ordered Coleman to remain in custody as he awaits trial. The investigation is ongoing, with one suspect deceased and another yet to be formally charged.
