Amanda Mann, a 31-year-old woman, was arrested by Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar on a Sunday, as reported by KENS-TV. Her partner, Dustin Michael Lawrence, was similarly taken into custody, according to the television station.
Both Mann and Lawrence are facing multiple charges, including endangering a child, classified as a third-degree felony, along with additional counts of child endangerment, child injury, and four counts of abandoning a child with intent.
Sheriff Salazar disclosed that the incident unfolded on a Friday evening when the child sustained severe burns from boiling water, an account reported by WOAI-TV. According to KENS, Mann reportedly contacted Lawrence to request ointment for the burns, explaining that the boiling water had accidentally spilled on the child.
As detailed by Sheriff Salazar, it is alleged that Mann and Lawrence took a shocking step, injecting the child with methamphetamine in a bid to alleviate her pain and facilitate her sleep throughout the night, a distressing revelation he shared with WOAI.
Upon the child waking up the following Saturday, a family friend reportedly encouraged the couple to seek medical assistance. Mann is said to have admitted the child to a hospital, yet disturbingly, she did not return, as per WOAI.
Deputies soon paid a visit to the hospital, where their inspection unveiled the extent of the child's injuries: severe facial burns and burns on her upper and lower body, as affirmed by KENS.
Sheriff Salazar expressed his profound outrage during a news conference, describing the situation as "infuriating" and labeling some of the actions involved as "unimaginable."
Furthermore, deputies discovered three other boys aged 2, 6, and 8 within the residence, while 2-month-old twins were also present. According to Salazar, Mann had left the 8-year-old in charge of caring for his younger siblings as she took the 1-year-old girl to a nearby hospital.
Most shockingly, the 6-year-old child was found to have tested positive for methamphetamine, a detail reported by WOAI.
The sheriff's office disclosed that Mann's bail has been set at $450,000, though Salazar lamented the fact that there might not be additional charges they could press against the couple, despite the extensive suffering inflicted on the child.
The investigation is presently ongoing.
