North Myrtle Beach Shooting Trial Delayed as Defense Argues Self-Defense
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Just before the trial began for a woman accused of a fatal shooting in July 2022, her defense team filed a motion arguing self-defense under South Carolina’s “Stand Your Ground” law.
LaFredia Todd, charged with murder, is accused of shooting and killing her co-worker, 26-year-old Quentin Johnson, at Nacho Hippo in North Myrtle Beach. The motion, filed Monday after jury selection, seeks to have the case dismissed if the judge rules the shooting was an act of self-defense.
Witness Testimony
During a hearing on Monday, witnesses recounted the moments leading up to the shooting. Maecas Mitchell, another Nacho Hippo employee, testified that Johnson and Todd were arguing before the gunshots rang out.
“I heard two gunshots,” Mitchell said, but admitted he was more focused on escaping than identifying who fired the shots. “I ran out. I didn’t know what was happening; I just wanted to get to safety.”
Prosecutors Highlight Todd’s Alleged History of Violence
Prosecutors pointed to Todd’s alleged violent behavior in the past, with Mitchell testifying that he saw her throw a frying pan at another worker on the night of the shooting. Mitchell also revealed that he had previously advised a manager that both Todd and Johnson should have been fired.
Trial Delays and Next Steps
The “Stand Your Ground” arguments are expected to continue through Wednesday. If the motion is denied, the trial could begin as early as Thursday.
This latest delay follows earlier postponements. The trial was initially set for July but was pushed to November before being delayed again due to the lead defense attorney stepping down for medical reasons.
The judge’s decision on the motion will determine whether the case proceeds to trial.
