SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — An employee at a Home Depot store in San Rafael, California, found themselves in hot water when the company uncovered their alleged embezzlement of a substantial sum over the course of a year, resulting in a total of $1.2 million missing.
The San Rafael Police Department received a report from Home Depot on October 17, outlining their belief that an employee had been involved in the embezzlement of $1.2 million. An internal investigation carried out by Home Depot revealed that this employee had been siphoning cash from the business since August 2022, according to information from the police.
With the necessary information in hand, investigators obtained a search warrant for the employee's residence. During the search, they discovered a small sum of cash along with an extensive collection of designer merchandise.
Authorities suspect that the embezzled money was used to purchase this high-end merchandise.
As reported by KRON, the employee allegedly confessed to taking the cash. Subsequently, law enforcement took them into custody and charged them with felony embezzlement.
Concerns about the substantial amount of cash that had allegedly been taken and the possibility that the employee might flee prompted investigators to add a bail enhancement.
The identity of the employee in question has not been disclosed at this time.
