Authorities suspect that a man who escaped from a Mississippi jail with three other inmates is responsible for the killing of a pastor who tried to assist him after he crashed his motorcycle in Jackson. The victim, Anthony Watts, was shot multiple times and died on the scene after stopping to help the suspect. Jackson Police Chief James E. Davis stated that the suspect matches the description of 22-year-old Dylan Arrington. The victim was the head pastor of St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church in D'Lo, Mississippi, according to Rev. Carl Burton, assistant pastor at the church.
Arrington is one of four prisoners who escaped from the Raymond Detention Center over the weekend, with the others being Casey Grayson, Corey Harrison, and Jerry Raynes. They were being held for various felony charges, primarily related to theft. Arrington was facing charges of auto theft and illegal possession of a firearm, according to reports. Investigators believe that the men may have camped out on the roof of the facility before making their escape.
Jones, the Hinds County Sheriff, said that one of the prisoners stole a Hinds County Public Works vehicle, which was found later in a suburb of Houston, and a stolen Chevy Silverado may also be linked to the escape. None of the escapees have been apprehended at this time. The victim's Red Dodge Ram was taken by the suspect and was last seen heading south on I-55 in Terry, Mississippi. The stolen vehicle has tan trim and Cowboys stickers on the front and back.
In July, a federal judge ordered the rare takeover of the jail due to supervision and staffing deficiencies, which led to "a stunning array of assaults, as well as deaths." However, in December, the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily halted the order after the county filed a motion for reconsideration.
