CHICAGO — A 24-year-old man is facing robbery and drug possession charges after allegedly stealing a luxury watch during a Facebook Marketplace transaction—right outside a police station—and then running into the station’s lobby while hiding the stolen item in his underwear.

Phillips Shockley had arranged to buy an Audemars Piguet watch for $3,000 from a 19-year-old seller through a Facebook listing. The two agreed to meet around noon on February 6 in the parking lot of the Austin (15th) District police station at 5701 West Madison.

Meeting at a police station is a common safety measure for online transactions, but in this case, it didn’t prevent the crime from unfolding.

Robbery in Plain Sight

According to prosecutors, when the seller handed over the watch for inspection, Shockley took a fighting stance, acted as if he had a weapon, and shoved the victim twice before snatching the watch and running off.

Instead of making a quick getaway, Shockley ran straight into the police station lobby—where multiple officers were present. The victim immediately alerted police, shouting, “He just robbed me! He took my watch!” Officers quickly detained Shockley inside the station.

Drugs and a Hidden Watch

During a pat-down search, police reportedly found 42 small baggies of suspected crack cocaine in Shockley’s pocket. When a sergeant conducted a more thorough search inside a lockup cell, officers noticed another bulge in his underwear.

After being asked to remove it, Shockley pulled out the stolen white and gold Audemars Piguet watch, studded with white stones, from his underwear, according to reports.

Legal Consequences

Judge Deidre Dyer granted the prosecution’s request to detain Shockley, citing the “opportunistic and random nature” of the crime. She also noted that Shockley was already on probation for a separate case in Will County when the robbery occurred.

Shockley has been charged with robbery and possession of a controlled substance and remains in custody as the case moves forward.
