Man in Custody After Maintenance Worker Reports Rifle, IDs, and Potential Bomb Materials in Chicago Apartment

CHICAGO — A man was taken into custody Monday after a maintenance worker allegedly discovered a rifle, multiple IDs, and what appeared to be bomb-making materials inside a Near South Side apartment.

The incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. in the 500 block of East 33rd Place. A heating and air conditioning technician working in the building called 911 after finding suspicious items in an apartment, including a rifle, various identification cards, chemicals, and objects resembling explosive devices.

A photo obtained by CWBChicago showed what appeared to be sticks of dynamite, wires, and rectangular objects marked “TNT” and “C4,” connected to an external box.

The Chicago Police Department (CPD) Bomb Squad arrived at the scene and temporarily relocated nearby residents as a precaution. After investigating, bomb squad technicians determined the objects were safe and posed no threat.

One individual was taken into custody, though police have not disclosed the charges or the reason for the detention. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not released further details about the suspect or the nature of the items found.
