Fulton County Deputy Injured in Shootout During Armed Robbery in Atlanta’s West End


ATLANTA — A Fulton County sheriff’s deputy was injured in a shootout Monday evening while responding to an armed robbery in Atlanta’s West End. The incident occurred just after 5 p.m. in the 600 block of Lee Street near Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard SW.


The Incident


Lt. Gerald Johnson, who was working an off-duty job, was approached by two employees of Easy Rental seeking help after an armed robbery. Moments later, Lt. Johnson encountered the suspect, who was armed with an assault-style rifle.

According to Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat, gunfire was exchanged between Lt. Johnson and the suspect. Both were injured in the shootout.

Sheriff Labat praised Lt. Johnson’s actions, stating, “He ran toward danger and saved lives in our estimation.”


Injuries and Outcome


Lt. Johnson was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to his right hand. Sheriff Labat confirmed that he is expected to recover and is being supported by his wife, who also works in law enforcement.



The suspect was fatally shot during the exchange. Sheriff Labat said, “When faced with an assault-style weapon, he [Lt. Johnson] did a wonderful job.”


Additional Details


The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating the use of force in the incident, while the Atlanta Police Department is handling the robbery investigation.


On Tuesday, the GBI revealed that the suspect had initially robbed a Krispy Kreme store behind the Easy Rental location before attempting to rob Easy Rental. Two employees were reportedly shot during the incident, but their conditions remain unknown.


Background on Lt. Johnson


Lt. Johnson has served with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office since 1993. After retiring in 2017, he returned to active duty part-time in 2022.


The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not released further details.
