Couple Arrested and Charged with First-Degree Murder Following Death of 5-Year-Old Granddaughter in Park Forest, Illinois
In an unfortunate incident in Park Forest, Illinois, a man and woman have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder after their 5-year-old granddaughter passed away last week.
According to a press release from the Park Forest Police Department, authorities received a distress call on July 14, shortly before 11 p.m., regarding an unresponsive 5-year-old girl at a residence located in the 300 block of Osage Street.
Reportedly, Klent Elwoods, aged 62, dialed 911 and purportedly confessed to mistreating his granddaughter, resulting in her unresponsiveness.
Upon the arrival of officers and paramedics, life-saving measures, including CPR, were initiated, and the child was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital. However, due to the severity of her injuries, she was subsequently airlifted to a Chicago hospital. Tragically, the following day at approximately 9 a.m., the young girl, identified as Jada Moore, succumbed to her injuries.
Law enforcement officials took both Elwoods and Lisa Jones, aged 57, into custody in connection with the incident.
During their detainment, Elwoods and Jones allegedly confessed to physically abusing the child, as reported by WGN-TV.
Police stated that Jada displayed evidence of recent physical abuse, as well as signs of previous mistreatment, according to the news outlet.
Following their arrests, Elwoods and Jones were formally charged with first-degree murder and appeared in bond court on Monday, as confirmed by the police.
"The Park Forest Police Department extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Jada, mourning the tragic loss of this young child's life," expressed the police in their statement.
