Roswell authorities were forced to intervene forcefully on Thursday, resulting in the fatal shooting of a man linked to a recent homicide. Javier Harvey Salinas Jr., aged 27, met his demise in a confrontation with Roswell police detectives near an apartment complex on South Sunset Avenue. The Roswell Police Department (RPD) disclosed this information in a press release. The incident unfolded at around 11:20 a.m., with Salinas succumbing to gunfire during an exchange with RPD detectives.

Fortunately, no officers or civilians sustained injuries during the encounter. Salinas was a wanted suspect in the March 30 murder case involving Nicolas Montoya, 21.According to the RPD press release, detectives spotted Salinas driving on Sunset Avenue and attempted to pull him over. However, Salinas accelerated, reaching speeds of nearly 100 mph before crashing his vehicle near West McGaffey. Armed and evidently determined, Salinas emerged from the wreckage and opened fire on the detectives.

In response, the detectives returned fire, ultimately striking Salinas. Despite attempting to flee, he collapsed between two buildings and was later pronounced dead at the scene. The New Mexico State Police will conduct an investigation into the shooting, in accordance with protocol.Meanwhile, RPD policy mandates placing involved detectives on administrative leave pending the investigation's outcome.

The incident prompted the closure of a section of South Sunset Avenue near Sunset Center. At present, the status of road access remains uncertain, as confirmed by RPD Public Information Officer Todd Wildermuth.Salinas's demise follows the recent arrests of Eric Contreras, 38, and Miguel Soltero, 19, who were charged with first-degree murder and evidence tampering in connection to Montoya's death.
