LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Deaundra Talton, 21, is accused of a murder from last year that had gone unsolved. In an effort to shift suspicion away from himself, he tried to implicate his mother and a friend, but DNA evidence linked him to the crime scene. These details emerged in Talton's arrest report.

Talton was taken into custody following a traffic stop on May 27 for an outstanding robbery warrant. He now faces charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the death of Kaito Thornton, 25, who was found shot multiple times in a car on Oct. 22, 2023.

8 News Now Investigators first reported Talton’s arrest on Tuesday. According to the arrest report, Talton and another suspect had arranged to meet Thornton for a drug deal but allegedly ended up robbing and shooting him on North 28th Street near Charleston Boulevard. Thornton’s girlfriend, who was also in the car but unharmed, told police they met with someone unknown to them who intended to buy marijuana.

The report states that Talton and another man got into the backseat of Thornton's car, agreed to pay $500 for the marijuana, and then Talton drew a gun and shot Thornton three to five times, aiming at his chest.

Police used cellphone records to trace text messages between Thornton and a number registered to Talton’s mother. However, the number had been disconnected, and Talton and his mother had moved from the associated address.

When police arrested Talton during the traffic stop, he initially claimed the drug-related texts were between his mother and a friend. He alleged that his mother sold prescription drugs to this friend. However, Talton’s mother refuted this claim, stating the phone was used exclusively by her son until November 2023 when she disconnected it due to non-payment.

Talton then attempted to blame a friend for the murder, falsely claiming to have an alibi and evidence, despite his DNA being found on a mask in the victim’s car.

Talton was scheduled to appear in court on May 30 for a status check.
