Authorities in Maine have charged a man with serious drug offenses after more than 30 pounds of fentanyl were allegedly delivered to a restaurant. The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Jeremy Mercier, was charged with aggravated illegal importation of scheduled drugs, aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs, and violation of conditional release. Mercier reportedly had a large wooden crate from Arizona delivered to an Auburn restaurant on Friday.
Staff initially believed it contained mugs but found several black-wrapped bags filled with fentanyl when they opened it. Police arrested Mercier when he arrived at the restaurant later that day, allegedly asking about the shipment. The value of the drugs was estimated to be over $3 million. Mercier had previously been convicted of distributing cocaine in 2007 and was being held without bail at Androscoggin County Jail.
