A 20-year-old man from Georgia is accused of kidnapping his former girlfriend from her workplace and fatally shooting her during a confrontation with police in the parking lot of a Clayton County school on Sunday night. Remarkably, the suspect had previously faced kidnapping charges involving the same victim exactly one year prior.

According to officials from the Fayetteville Police Department, the incident unfolded around 11 p.m. when reports of a kidnapping at a Wingstop restaurant on Flynn Street prompted a 911 call. Witnesses informed the operators that an armed man had entered the establishment and coerced his 19-year-old ex-girlfriend, who was an employee there, to leave with him against her will.

While en route to the scene, responding officers noticed a red Chevrolet Camaro matching the description of the vehicle in which the suspect and victim were reportedly traveling. Upon spotting the police, the driver attempted to flee, sparking a pursuit that concluded at Lovejoy High School in Clayton County. Authorities employed a PIT maneuver to immobilize the vehicle, which came to a halt at the school's entrance.

In the midst of the standoff that followed, the suspect fired shots at the officers and their patrol cars, prompting the law enforcement personnel to seek cover. Tragically, the victim, who was still inside the Chevrolet, was shot multiple times and succumbed to her injuries.

Once the police deployed a chemical irritant into the vehicle, the suspect exited the car, and officers promptly took him into custody. The deceased woman was found inside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

The alleged kidnapper has been identified as 20-year-old Cameron Ja'Michael Hopkins from Albany. He currently faces charges of kidnapping and aggravated assault from the Fayetteville Police Department, as well as charges of malice murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime from Clayton County.

The victim has been identified as Khaliyah Jones.

Disturbingly, this was not the first time that Hopkins targeted his victim. On July 16, 2022, almost exactly one year prior to this tragic incident, Hopkins abducted the then-18-year-old Jones with the assistance of 33-year-old Demarco Jennings. During the previous kidnapping, Hopkins confronted Jones while she sat in her car at a Lovejoy Walmart parking lot. He shattered the car window and forcibly removed her from the vehicle.

Authorities discovered that Hopkins abandoned his car and coerced Jones into the backseat of Jennings' car. At some point, Jones managed to escape and sought refuge in a nearby business. Both Hopkins and Jennings were apprehended in Albany and subsequently booked into Clayton County Jail on charges of terrorist threats, kidnapping, and other offenses. However, Hopkins was released on bond in September 2022.

The investigation into the recent incident is still ongoing, and the Fayetteville Police Department encourages anyone with information that could assist in the case to come forward and contact them.
