Nashville Man Arrested After Shooting on I-65, Faces Multiple Charges

LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. — A Nashville man has been arrested following a shooting incident on I-65 near the Alabama-Tennessee state line on February 27. Authorities say Joel Cespedes, 35, a self-proclaimed drug trafficker affiliated with the Sinaloa Cartel, is in custody after he allegedly shot at a woman while pursuing her on the interstate.

According to the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), the woman reported that Cespedes had been following her and called her, demanding to speak with her. When she refused and continued driving, Cespedes threatened to kill her before opening fire on her vehicle.

The woman was able to record the incident and called 911 while exiting the interstate to find a safe location. Fortunately, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency State Trooper Calder, who was nearby, conducted a traffic stop on Cespedes’ vehicle. Additional law enforcement officers responded to the scene, where probable cause was established to arrest him on charges of attempted murder and second-degree domestic violence—stalking.

During the arrest, authorities discovered that Cespedes was in possession of a firearm, several fraudulent identification cards, passports, and numerous credit cards belonging to other individuals. He was also found with fentanyl and faces additional charges of trafficking in stolen identities, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and possession of a controlled substance.

Cespedes is currently held on a $2,005,000 bond.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Investigator Martin Evans at (256) 232-0111.
