Man Charged in Christmas Eve Shooting on Chicago Green Line Train
CHICAGO — A 43-year-old man has been charged in connection with the shooting of a passenger aboard a Green Line train in the Loop on Christmas Eve. Sterling Sawyer, now in custody, is accused of shooting a 35-year-old man during an argument on December 24, 2023.
According to prosecutors, the incident occurred around 9:35 p.m. The victim boarded the train at Washington and Wabash, where he encountered Sawyer. The two men, who reportedly knew each other, began arguing. During the confrontation, Sawyer allegedly drew a gun and shot the victim before fleeing the scene.
The shooting was captured on CTA surveillance footage, prosecutors said, though reports from both the police and felony complaints state the incident occurred at the Clark-Lake station.
During a court hearing, Judge David Kelly ordered Sawyer to remain in custody, citing concerns about his inability to manage his anger and impulses. Sawyer reportedly interrupted the proceedings multiple times.
Sawyer faces charges of aggravated battery by discharging a firearm, possession of a firearm by a repeat felon, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Prosecutors revealed that Sawyer has two prior felony convictions: one for manufacture and delivery of heroin and another for attempted arson.
The victim’s condition following the shooting has not been disclosed. The case is ongoing.
