Man Charged in Violent Red Line Robberies, Under Investigation for Additional Mugging
CHICAGO — Breon Edwards, 20, has been charged in connection with two violent robberies aboard Red Line trains last year, with prosecutors accusing him of targeting random victims in the Loop. A Chicago police report suggests Edwards may be linked to at least one more CTA mugging.
Judge John Hock ordered Edwards detained, citing the dangerous nature of the crimes. He described Edwards and his accomplices as “preying on random victims” and committing “extremely dangerous robberies.”
The two robberies occurred hours apart on September 16, beginning with the assault of a 21-year-old man at the State-Lake platform around 3:30 a.m. Edwards and his group then robbed a 22-year-old man on a train near Jackson at 6 a.m. In both cases, one of Edwards’ accomplices physically attacked the first victim while another strangled the second victim, who was hospitalized.
Edwards was arrested after officers saw him fail to use a turn signal and attempted to flee. He led police on a high-speed chase, hitting a parked car and driving through a Gage Park soccer field before his Volkswagen Jetta broke down. Edwards allegedly attempted to flee on foot, running through six lanes of traffic before being caught by authorities.
Edwards is also suspected of participating in a November 27 robbery at Argyle on the Red Line. While surveillance images of the suspects were released, no charges have been filed in that case. At the time of the robberies, Edwards was on probation for two previous burglary convictions.
