Man Sentenced to 888 Years for Murdering Neighbor at YMCA, Already Serving Time for 1985 Murder

CHICAGO — George Field, 62, was sentenced on Friday to an additional 888 years in prison after being found guilty of the 2018 murder of his 83-year-old neighbor at the Lakeview YMCA. This sentence is added to his existing 35-year prison sentence for a 1985 murder.

Field, who had already served time for a 1985 conviction for four counts of murder, was found guilty of seven counts of murder and one count of home invasion after a bench trial overseen by Judge James Obbish. The sentences will be served concurrently, with 8 years for the home invasion and 888 years for the murders.

The tragic killing took place on January 12, 2018, when Arthur Cannon, 83, was brutally assaulted by Field in his YMCA room, located at 3333 North Marshfield. Cannon, who died 10 days later from multiple injuries, was reportedly attacked with a hand truck or dolly, according to prosecutors. When the building’s security staff arrived, they found Field threatening to kill Cannon unless he was given cigarettes and water. Chicago police later found Field on top of Cannon, who was severely injured and could still tell officers about the argument that led to the violent attack.

Cannon suffered multiple broken ribs and facial fractures before his condition worsened, leading to his death. Field was initially arrested for misdemeanor battery but after Cannon’s death, the charge was upgraded to murder.

Previous Conviction

Field’s lengthy criminal history includes a 1985 conviction for multiple murders and aggravated battery, for which he was sentenced to 35 years in prison. He was paroled in 2006, only to be convicted again in 2018.

Recent Murder at YMCA

In a grim coincidence, another murder occurred in September 2023 on the fourth floor of the Lakeview YMCA, where the 27-year-old victim was found fatally shot in an apartment. The suspect, Danny Berry, 45, fled the scene and was later tracked down in Ohio after his vehicle was located. The confrontation with Ohio State Troopers resulted in Berry’s vehicle crashing and bursting into flames. Berry was shot by officers after he exited the car, armed, and threatened to kill himself.

Ongoing Investigations

While George Field faces a lengthy prison sentence, investigations into the second murder at the YMCA are ongoing.
