Chicago Man Shot in Shootout Over Alleged Stolen Car, Then Charged for Firing Weapon

CHICAGO — A 23-year-old Chicago man who believed he had found his stolen car at a Far South Side gas station was shot in a gunfight with the car’s occupants—only to later be charged for firing his weapon, according to court records.

On January 17, Rodney Clemons arrived at Roseland Hospital seeking treatment for gunshot wounds, police said. He initially told officers that he had spotted his stolen Genesis at the BP station at 150 West 127th Street and confronted the people inside, who then shot him.

However, surveillance footage from the gas station revealed a different story. According to police, Clemons arrived as a passenger in a Buick around noon, stepped out, and immediately began shooting at the occupants of the Genesis. The individuals inside the vehicle fired back before speeding away, leaving Clemons without his car once again.

Prosecutors charged Clemons with aggravated discharge of a firearm toward an occupied vehicle. Judge Antara Rivera ordered him detained at the state’s request.
