**Man Sentenced to 25 Years for Fatal Stabbing of Elderly Man in Rogers Park**

CHICAGO — A 29-year-old man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of a 75-year-old man in the Rogers Park neighborhood. The sentence was handed down by Judge Peggy Chiampas on Tuesday, following Cash Johnson's guilty plea to one count of murder, as per court documents.

The victim, Nanda Bhattarai, was initially injured in the attack on March 19, 2021, but succumbed to his injuries twelve days later.

Surveillance footage from multiple cameras captured Johnson leaving his home and walking to a nearby McDonald’s, where he made a purchase using a credit card. Around 5:40 p.m., he began his walk back home. The footage then showed Bhattarai following Johnson on the same path.

The video also depicted Johnson entering a gangway in the 1600 block of West Morse Avenue, with Bhattarai, who used a cane, following him closely. About a minute later, Bhattarai emerged from the gangway, clutching his stomach and bleeding profusely, prosecutors said. Despite being critically injured with eight stab wounds, Bhattarai managed to walk two blocks to his home and called 911.

Further footage allegedly shows Johnson fleeing from the gangway through the opposite end and jogging back to his apartment after the attack.

Approximately a month later, Johnson was arrested at his home. Police seized the shoes and jacket he was seen wearing in the video, prosecutors reported.

Johnson provided conflicting accounts of what happened in the gangway, initially claiming that he was confronted by men armed with a knife who tried to rob him. He later suggested that he called Bhattarai into the gangway because he believed the elderly man wanted to buy marijuana from him, according to prosecutors.
