Brooklyn Man Fatally Shoots Girlfriend Before Taking His Own Life on a Busy Street
BROOKLYN, NY — A tragic murder-suicide unfolded on a Brooklyn sidewalk Tuesday morning when Gabriel Sanchez, 41, shot his girlfriend, 28-year-old Celina Ramos, and then turned the gun on himself, authorities said.
The incident, which occurred near Jefferson Avenue and Knickerbocker Avenue in Bushwick, came after a heated argument between the couple the previous night at Ramos’ Williamsburg apartment. Family members said the dispute led to Sanchez storming out, with Ramos following despite warnings from her grandmother to stay home.
“She said she’d be back in the morning, but she never made it back,” a devastated relative recounted.
Around 7:30 a.m., Sanchez chased Ramos down the street as she screamed for help. Witnesses and surveillance footage showed Sanchez grabbing her from behind and shooting her in the head. Moments later, he shot himself in the neck, and when that didn’t end his life, he fired again, this time fatally striking himself in the head.
Both were transported to local hospitals—Ramos to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center and Sanchez to Woodhull Hospital—where they were pronounced dead.
A Troubled Relationship and Background
Family members described Ramos as a hard-working young woman who had recently begun a job with the Department of Education. She was dedicated to supporting her grandmother and had a bright future ahead.
“She was a good kid,” one relative said. “She didn’t deserve this. Nobody did.”
The couple had been dating since the summer of 2024, and family members expressed confusion over why Ramos was attracted to Sanchez, who reportedly did not hold steady employment and often made his money “in the streets.” Sanchez had a history of erratic behavior, and relatives speculated that something may have “snapped” in him.
Just weeks before the tragedy, Sanchez was arrested for stalking and harassing an ex-girlfriend, reportedly emailing explicit photos of himself and making threats against her life. He was due in court for those charges in March.
Ramos’ family is left grieving and grappling with unanswered questions about why the tragic events occurred. “Nobody knows why he did it,” a relative said. “The only people who know are gone.”
