Chicago’s First Homicide of 2025: Lawndale Man Charged in Girlfriend’s Death
CHICAGO — A Lawndale man has been charged with murder after allegedly killing his long-time girlfriend during a New Year’s celebration early on January 1. The victim, 43-year-old Martina Mosby, was identified as Chicago’s first homicide victim of 2025.
The incident occurred at the couple’s home in the 1200 block of South Sawyer, where Mosby, her boyfriend Freddie Freeman, 38, and her 18-year-old daughter were ringing in the new year. Freeman and Mosby had been together for a decade and had lived together for the past two years.
Argument Turns Deadly
According to prosecutors, the celebration included Freeman firing a gun off the back porch, followed by Mosby’s daughter taking a turn. Shortly after, the couple got into a brief argument. Freeman then retrieved a second firearm and allegedly fired several shots, striking Mosby multiple times.
Police recovered eleven shell casings from the scene, which matched a .40-caliber firearm Freeman is accused of using. Emergency responders transported Mosby to a hospital, where she died shortly after arrival.
Attempted Escape and Evidence Concealment
Freeman reportedly fled the scene after the shooting, hiding both firearms in a trash can. Prosecutors also allege that Freeman attempted to prevent Mosby’s daughter from calling 911.
Legal Proceedings
Judge Shauna Boliker ordered Freeman held without bail on a charge of first-degree murder, citing the severity of the allegations in the detention petition.
Freeman has a minimal prior criminal record in Cook County. In 2017, he was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault, but the case was dropped when the complainant failed to appear in court.
The investigation into Mosby’s death is ongoing, and Freeman awaits trial.
