Nine women were shot, with one fatality, during a birthday party on Chicago's West Side early Sunday morning. The Interim Chicago Police Superintendent Fred Waller and CPD's Crime Victim Services Unit will address victim services and resources at 12:30 p.m. at CPD HQ today.
Natasha Graham, a grieving mother, mourns the loss of her oldest daughter, 21-year-old Kanesha Gaines, who was fatally shot in the city's North Lawndale neighborhood. The shooting occurred during a Hawaiian-themed birthday celebration in the 1500-block of South Keeler Avenue around 1 a.m. A black Jeep carrying unidentified suspects approached, and they began shooting at the group of women.
Community activist Andrew Holmes questions the motive behind the attack, as it seems personal to target a group of women celebrating a birthday. The victims, aged between 20 to 33 years old, suffered severe injuries, and Gaines tragically passed away due to gunshot wounds to the face.
The incident has left the neighborhood residents fearful, and relatives once again face the trauma of loss, as Gaines' brother was also a victim of gun violence in 2019. Gaines, a home healthcare worker and part-time stylist, leaves behind two young children.
The grieving mother expressed her anger over the prevalence of guns on the streets and the willingness of individuals to use them, calling for an end to the violence and justice for her daughter's death.
As of Monday, no suspects are in custody, and Area Four detectives are investigating the case. Chicago police released a statement expressing condolences to the victim's family and providing support to those injured and affected by the tragedy.
To help those impacted by the shooting, the Chicago Police Crime Victim Services Unit established an assistance center at the Deliverance Temple of Apostolic Faith Church on 1457 S. Komensky Ave, open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today.
