Minnesota prisons resort to periodic lockdowns due to staff shortage

The largest correctional facility in Minnesota, located in Faribault, is currently experiencing a series of temporary lockdowns, not due to disciplinary issues but rather staffing shortages. WCCO has received reports of inmates being confined to their cells, unable to participate in classes or access commissary services.

The Department of Corrections has attributed these lockdowns to low staffing levels, necessitating rotating measures to ensure safety. According to Paul Schnell, Commissioner of the Minnesota DOC, the lockdowns involve alternating schedules, with portions of the facility being accessible at different times.

This approach aims to maintain safety for both staff and inmates.Currently, the Faribault prison is operating with 42 fewer corrections officers than its full complement. Shannon Loehrke, Director of Communications for the DOC, explained that staffing shortages have affected programming opportunities, as they heavily rely on staff presence.

Despite these challenges, commissary services have been provided to all inmates upon request, and property distribution during lockdowns adheres to the required timeline.Schnell acknowledged that staffing issues persist in half of the state's prisons but expressed optimism about reaching 95% staffing levels by the end of the following month.
