GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A mother has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the stabbing death of her 6-year-old son in Gwinnett County, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department.
The woman in question, 23-year-old A'zaria Shante Burton, now faces a slew of charges related to the incident, including malice murder, felony murder, first-degree arson, aggravated assault, tampering with evidence, possession of a knife during the commission of certain crimes, and first-degree cruelty to children. Burton was taken into custody on Friday and is currently being held without bond, as reported by the police.
The incident unfolded on October 19 when Gwinnett County Police and fire crews initially responded to what was reported as an apartment fire at the 3500 The Vine Apartments. Upon entering the unit affected by the fire, firefighters found the young boy, Jayveon Pruitt, "unresponsive" and suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Pruitt was transported to the hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
During the investigation, law enforcement authorities discovered a woman behind the building. She was described as having wet clothing and was only wearing one sock. This woman was subsequently taken into custody. However, the police did not confirm whether the woman they detained was indeed A'zaria Shante Burton until Tuesday's announcement of her arrest and charges.
