Gunfire erupted in Salinas, California, on Wednesday morning, resulting in a Monterey County Sheriff deputy being shot. The incident took place when an individual, who had been served papers earlier that day, discharged multiple rounds from a firearm within a residential property located in the vicinity of East Market and Sun Street, according to Salinas Mayor Kimbley Craig.
Law enforcement promptly responded to the reports of gunshots, and it is believed that the suspect took refuge inside their residence, refusing to surrender. During an exchange of gunfire, a deputy sustained a gunshot wound, as confirmed by Monterey County spokesperson Nick Pasculli. Fortunately, the injured deputy is currently alive and receiving medical attention.
In response to the unfolding situation, the Sheriff's Office issued a shelter-in-place order for residents residing south of Calle Cebu, north of E. Market St, east of Peach Dr., and west of Highway 101. An official alert advised individuals to seek secure shelter indoors and remain there until receiving an "all clear" signal or instructions to evacuate.
Given the severity of the incident, authorities have summoned the assistance of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, who are actively engaged in the ongoing response efforts in Salinas.
