After a two-week search, Kevin Mason, a murder suspect mistakenly freed from an Indiana detention facility, has been recaptured, according to officials.
Kevin Mason, 28, who was detained on Sept. 11 concerning a 2021 Minneapolis murder, was inadvertently let go from the Indianapolis Adult Detention Center two days later because of a documentation oversight by non-uniformed personnel, as per the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
Evidence indicated Mason left Indianapolis the evening he was released, prompting a search spanning several cities.
On Wednesday, around 1 p.m. CT, Mason was located and arrested in St. Paul, Minnesota, with the involvement of the U.S. Marshals North Star Fugitive Task Force, Dakota County Sheriff’s SWAT, and the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
The U.S. Marshals Service mentioned that their efforts, combined with surveillance, led them to believe Mason was in a South St. Paul residence, for which they acquired a search warrant.
Sheriff Kerry Forestal of Marion County expressed his gratitude to the U.S. Marshals Service for their diligent work and collaboration.
Forestal provided a timeline, noting Mason's erroneous release at approximately 11:05 a.m. ET on Sept. 13. Officials became cognizant of the mistake around 5:30 p.m. that day. It was revealed that Desiree Oliver, Mason's girlfriend, collected him from near the jail later in the evening. Subsequent actions by Oliver, such as purchasing a new phone and other items suggestive of aiding Mason, led investigators to monitor her discreetly. Oliver was arrested on Sept. 20 and formally charged with assisting a criminal. Her court appearance is slated for Nov. 29.
Mason, who won't face charges in Indianapolis, is accused of the fatal shooting of Dontevius
Catchings, 29, during a Minneapolis church funeral in June 2021. He's charged with second-degree murder and firearms possession, with an additional parole violation warrant from Minnesota.
A $10,000 reward had been offered by the U.S. Marshals Service for tips leading to Mason's apprehension. Following the oversight of Mason's release, two employees of the Marion County Sheriff's Office were dismissed.
