Mother Arrested for Baby's Death After Leaving Child Unattended During Vacation
A woman from Ohio has been taken into custody following the tragic death of her baby daughter, who was left alone without supervision while the mother went on vacation.
Kristel Candelario, aged 31, has been charged with murder after her 16-month-old child, Jailyn, was discovered unconscious at their residence on 16 June. The Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office released a statement confirming these details.
Although the infant displayed no visible signs of injury, she was declared dead at the scene. The Medical Examiner's Office later determined that Jailyn had been left unattended for approximately 10 days prior to her passing.
According to an affidavit obtained by NBC, investigators revealed that Ms. Candelario had been vacationing in Puerto Rico and Detroit during the period when her daughter was left alone. Reportedly, she admitted to leaving Jailyn "at home, all alone and unattended."
Upon returning home, Ms. Candelario immediately contacted emergency services and reported Jailyn's condition, stating that the child was severely dehydrated. Law enforcement officials who arrived at the scene found soiled bedding, contaminated with urine and feces, as documented in the incident report.
Local news station WKYC interviewed neighbors, who disclosed that Ms. Candelario had previously approached them to watch over Jailyn while she was away. One resident, who preferred to be identified only by her first name, shared that Ms. Candelario had initially entrusted Jailyn to her and her 13-year-old daughter in August 2022.
The neighbor described a distressing situation where Ms. Candelario would go for weeks without answering calls, leaving them struggling to meet the baby's basic needs. "I was the one calling her saying, 'Look, I need milk. I need money. I don't have money to buy milk for your baby.' What am I supposed to do?" said Iris, recounting her experience.
Iris's daughter expressed deep sadness over Jailyn's untimely demise, stating, "Jailyn really didn't deserve what happened to her. She was amazing and really adorable, and I miss her a lot."
Currently, Ms. Candelario is being held on a bond of $1 million. Her next court appearance is scheduled for 28 June.
