13-Time Convicted Felon Charged Again After Leaving His ID Behind in Burglary

CHICAGO — Eduardo Torres, a 13-time convicted felon, is facing fresh burglary charges after allegedly breaking into a garage in Edgewater and inadvertently leaving behind a backpack containing his driver’s license, which led authorities directly to him.

On December 21, Torres, currently on probation for a previous burglary conviction, was caught on surveillance footage entering a garage in the 1300 block of West Rosedale. Authorities say he stole a Weedwacker and leaf blower but made the critical mistake of leaving his backpack behind at the scene. The backpack contained his driver’s license, which had his name and current address, making the evidence unmistakable.

Later that day, Torres allegedly attempted to cover his tracks by filing a false robbery report, claiming his backpack was stolen in the 5600 block of North Ridge. However, upon reviewing surveillance footage from the reported location, police found no evidence of a robbery, and Torres was not seen on the video.

Torres has a long criminal history, including previous sentences for multiple robberies, armed violence, and other serious crimes dating back to 1995. In April 2022, he pleaded guilty to burglary in exchange for four years of probation.

Prosecutors, citing Torres’ extensive criminal background, argued that he should be held in custody pending trial, and Judge Antara Rivera agreed.
