Man on Parole Charged with Murder After Fatal Shooting Outside South Side Grocery Store
CHICAGO — A man on parole for gun possession has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly shooting and killing another man outside a South Side grocery store.
Prosecutors said 36-year-old Benjamin Cruz was arguing with a woman in the parking lot of Food 4 Less at 7030 South Ashland on November 6. During the argument, the woman called Mardy Williams, an eight-time convicted felon, who then drove to the scene.
According to court filings, Williams met the woman in the parking lot and then walked across the lot to confront Cruz. As Cruz approached his vehicle, Williams allegedly pulled out a gun and shot him twice before fleeing with the woman.
Cruz was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
During a detention hearing, Judge Mary Marubio ordered Williams held without bail, describing the attack as “unprovoked” and citing his extensive criminal history.
Williams, who was paroled in February after serving time for unlawful possession of a weapon and aggravated battery of a peace officer, has a lengthy criminal record. His convictions include armed robbery and burglary in 2016, drug possession in 2014, and robbery and unlawful possession of a weapon in 2012.
The investigation remains ongoing.
