A Lynchburg courtroom descended into chaos during a plea hearing for murder suspect Devan Wooding on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in charges against three individuals. Wooding was about to admit guilt to first-degree murder and other charges related to a 2021 shooting incident when the situation escalated.
The tumult began following the playback of a distressing 911 call during the hearing, which included the sound of gunshots and the victim's screams. This triggered an emotional response from the victim's acquaintances, leading to an altercation. Some attendees breached the courtroom barrier and confronted Wooding, leading to a swift response from both sheriff's deputies and Lynchburg police officers to contain the situation.
Sheriff Don Sloan of Lynchburg commended the quick actions of his deputies and local police officers, noting their preparedness for such emergencies. He confirmed that three people faced assault charges due to the disturbance.
The Lynchburg Sheriff's Office and the Lynchburg Police Department are jointly investigating the incident. Remarkably, Wooding remained unharmed and later entered a guilty plea to several serious charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and firearm-related offenses.
Wooding's sentencing is scheduled for July 10 at 9 a.m. at the Lynchburg Circuit Court.
