Police released surveillance footage and images on Monday night of a man they believe is connected to the shooting that killed Chicago Police Officer Luis Huesca over the weekend in the Gage Park neighborhood.
The suspect is seen on video visiting a convenience store just before 10 p.m. on the night of the incident, making a purchase and then leaving. About an hour later, the same man is seen on video at another convenience store, wearing a different outfit and buying a water bottle.
Shortly after the shooting, the police shared video of a man they believe to be the same individual, walking down the street. They did not label him a suspect but stated they were trying to identify him in relation to the shooting, and they consider him armed and dangerous.
CBS 2 News obtained video from a nearby resident showing officers investigating clothing that seems to match what the man was wearing in the surveillance footage. The police said they cannot confirm any direct link between the clothing and the person in the surveillance footage due to the ongoing investigation.
Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert on the 5500 block of South Kedzie Avenue just before 3 a.m. Sunday. After patrolling the area, they proceeded to the 3100 block of West 56th Street, about a block away, where they found Officer Huesca, 30, outside with gunshot wounds.
Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said Officer Huesca was returning home from his shift when he was shot multiple times. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he passed away.
Huesca was off duty but in uniform at the time of the incident. Pastor Matt Foley of St. Simon Chapel of St. Gall Parish in Gage Park expressed grief over the loss, calling it "a tremendous loss" and saying Huesca was a dedicated officer who was invested in improving the community and enjoyed playing soccer in his free time.
"He had an innocent and healthy demeanor," said Pastor Foley. "He enjoyed sports, serving others, and was a good friend."
Huesca's family said he died just two days before his 31st birthday. Candles were placed along the driveway leading to the officer's home on Monday. A bullet hole in the garage further indicated the violent events that occurred.
Ma
yor Johnson visited Huesca's family at their home on Sunday and noted the impact of the loss on the community and officers involved.
Other visitors brought flowers and food to Huesca's home, including the mother of Officer Andrés Mauricio Vásquez Lasso, who was also killed in Gage Park a year ago while responding to a domestic violence call.
Officer Huesca had previously paid tribute to Vásquez Lasso in a memorial video, and now Vásquez Lasso's mother, Rocio Lasso, has paid tribute to Huesca.
Detectives towed away Huesca's car from an alley about six blocks from his home and discovered pieces of clothing in a nearby yard. Investigators have yet to determine if Huesca was the victim of a carjacking.
