Chicago Man Arrested for Robbing 11 Victims Lured via Facebook Marketplace Ads
CHICAGO — Emerson Watson Jr., 19, has been arrested and charged in connection with a series of armed robberies targeting victims lured into Facebook Marketplace meetups.
Between September and December 2024, Watson allegedly committed eleven robberies across six separate locations, all of which involved luring victims through online merchandise ads. One victim was robbed of $8,000 in cash, while others lost amounts ranging from $1,500 to $2,800, according to prosecutors.
The robberies took place primarily in the 1100 block of North Menard, with incidents also reported in the 8600 block of South Phillips. One robbery occurred on Christmas Day, where Watson targeted a man and woman, stealing $2,800. On December 30, he allegedly attempted to rob three men in the same area.
Chicago Police investigators used digital data, vehicle records, and other evidence to connect Watson to the crimes. Judge Deidre Dyer ordered Watson’s detention, citing his juvenile probation for a previous armed robbery conviction and the “randomness and scope” of his crime spree, which she said posed a significant threat to public safety.
Watson is charged with multiple counts of armed robbery, with additional charges related to attempted robbery in connection with his December 30 actions.
